fwd'ed from another list serve... Great oppourtunities!
Dear Friends:
The NIH Office of Intramural Training & Education
<http://go.usa.gov/g9H3> (OITE)
is pleased to send you this update on training opportunities in the NIH
Intramural Research Program. We invite you to explore opportunities for
trainees at all educational levels and hope you will also take advantage of
our online career
resources<https://www.training.nih.gov/oite_videocasts_-_revised>
including
videocasts on the academic and industry job search process, non-bench
careers, the career exploration process, grant writing, and the
graduate/professional school application and interview processes.
Many of our programs are accepting applications now or will begin accepting
applications in early in January. In addition to outstanding full-time
biomedical research opportunities, we provide significant career
development opportunities for all trainees, including workshops, courses,
journal clubs and access to the OITE Career Services Center. We invite you
to join our diverse community of over 4500 trainees for great science and
outstanding career development resources.
· The NIH Summer Internship Program <http://go.usa.gov/g9wR> (SIP)
accepts high school, undergraduate, graduate and professional school
students in biomedical, social science, behavioral, and computational
fields. It is critically important that you watch our YouTube video and
read the tips for applicants before starting your application so you
maximize your chances of being offered a position. The SIP application is
now live; the deadline in March 1 but students who apply early have a very
strong advantage, so skip the Thanksgiving football :-) and start your
application over the long holiday weekend!
· If you are currently a community college student, the NIH Community
College Summer Enrichment Program <http://go.usa.gov/g9wd> (CCSEP) is for
you. CCSEP, part of the NIH Summer Internship Program (SIP), provides
students an opportunity to participate in special group activities to
prepare for academic transitions and to explore careers in biomedical
research and healthcare. Note that the CCSEP deadline is much earlier than
the SIP deadline: January 17, 2014!
· If you are a college student looking for college scholarships, check
out the Undergraduate Scholarship Program <http://go.usa.gov/g97j> (UGSP).
Although applications won’t be accepted until January 2014, the program has
several important eligibility requirements, so check out the Web site and
contact us now with your questions.
· If you are an undergraduate looking to develop additional research
skills during a gap year (or two) check out the NIH Postbac
Program<http://go.usa.gov/g9f3> and
our NIH Academy <http://go.usa.gov/g9fT>, a supplement to the NIH postbac
program focused on health disparities. Applications are accepted year
round, but you should apply in January/February if you wish to start this
summer or fall. NIH postbacs are highly recruited by graduate and
professional schools and we provide significant advice and assistance
through the decision-making, application, and interview process.
The NIH intramural program also welcomes graduate students through the Graduate
Partnerships Program <http://go.usa.gov/g9QW> (GPP) and postdoctoral
fellows<http://go.usa.gov/g9sF>.
Current postdoc openings are listed online <http://go.usa.gov/g9UA> but
many NIH scientists do not advertise positions, so I encourage you to
contact NIH scientists directly. You can find tips on applying, thoughts on
finding good science and career mentors, and a link to the Intramural
Researcher Database on our web site.
Finally – my personal recommendation to all of you — take some time to
watch this exciting and inspiring seminar by Dr. Francis Collins, NIH
Director: http://videocast.nih.gov/Summary.asp?File=18021. Watch to the end
for a fun surprise.
