IS and CS students,

Here is a nice 12-week internship opportunity for this summer with good pay at Sears, in the group that develops and manages the middleware between their servers and mobile devices. The contact person is a Calvin grad, and he mentions project management, so this would be a superb experience for IS majors, though all are welcome to apply.

If you're interested, feel free to contact him and their HR person directly.

-Joel.

Subject: Recruiting for a Summer Intern in Information Systems at Sears Holdings

Hello Dr. Adams

I am reaching out to you because I am currently recruiting and interviewing for a summer internship I have available. I believe this internship to be a tremendous opportunity for the right candidate and I really want to make sure I do whatever I can to find the best candidate. To me that naturally means reaching out to Calvin.

A little bit about me and my team. I attended Calvin during 1991 and 1992. Although I didn’t graduate from Calvin my years there were tremendously important as they paved the way towards me earning my Ph.D. from Notre Dame some years later. I focused on the senior level Physics curriculum while at Calvin and am including two of my mentors from that time, Dr. Steenwyk and Dr. Van Baak. They can vouch that I am not some random crazy person off the street and now they also know where I have ended up.

My team writes the Service Abstraction Layer (SAL) that sits between Sears’ multiple backend servers and our front end clients that run our mWeb, Android and iOS applications. The work we do is very real and tangible; when we push a load you can see the results immediately on your smart phone.

I am in particular looking for someone to help me this summer with the project management aspects of running a software team. As you highlight on your Information Systems home page a degree in IS can lead to a career in project management and this internship would provide a taste of what software project management is all about. I have attached the job description for this internship.

Sears internships are typically 12 weeks long and in my opinion they do pay quite well. The current rate is $24 / hr. The ideal candidate would be between their Junior and Senior years during the summer of 2014. I have included my HR representative, Louis Deli, on this email as well. He should be able to answer any HR questions you have and I know that he is always on the lookout for strong candidates in computer science.

If you think that this opportunity is a good fit for the work your department is doing and the students you are educating please let me know so we can discuss further.

Thank you!
