Subject: Google internships?

Hey, Calvin CS profs!

I just wanted to let you know that, if any of the current students have ambitions to intern at Google, they should be applying now. There's a generally absurd number of Calvin grads at Google right now for the size of our program (I can think of 6 off the top of my head from the '08, '09, and '10 classes alone), but I thought I'd reach out in case nobody else has.

Freshman and Sophomores, particularly those from underrepresented groups, should especially look into the STEP program<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__buildyourfuture.withgoogle.com_programs_step_&d=DwMFaQ&c=4rZ6NPIETe-LE5i2KBR4rw&r=NlyM7BQ9GRgKPFHl_BEF5Q&m=GcSGpYn7hlU1TziTdAhXZG-r2hFcgpbBz7npnOWzJKI&s=zH1ZgYMkXDPG3hL1ykHi3n6nAcBeTfhayvILLFRqnEY&e=>, which closes applications on November 1. I co-hosted a pair of STEP interns two years ago, and it was a great experience for everybody. Juniors, and potentially high-performing sophomores, should check out the traditional internship roles. That application window closes in early December, but applying earlier is almost certainly better (though the sophomores may want as much of CS-212 under their belts as possible).

I'd also make sure students know that they don't apply to a specific team or location. Applicants who make it through the technical interview process then have a separate process of informal interviews to find the best mutual fit of project/team/location among teams that have approved intern projects.

Also, for any seniors who are just looking to get their foot in the door, I'd also make sure they know about the Engineering Residency Program<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__www.google.com_about_careers_students_engres.html&d=DwMFaQ&c=4rZ6NPIETe-LE5i2KBR4rw&r=NlyM7BQ9GRgKPFHl_BEF5Q&m=GcSGpYn7hlU1TziTdAhXZG-r2hFcgpbBz7npnOWzJKI&s=z5GCwoVSzG6FA70Bt6ktF8aTVD0XyhCfM1pg11PnahE&e=>.

I think that Calvin students/alums are especially well prepared for Google's approach to technical interviews if they can get in the queue. So, if you catch wind of any potential applicants, let me know and I'll check to see if there's anything I'm able to do to provide a signal boost and support them in the process!

I hope everything is going well at Calvin! You all do amazing work!
