I'm pleased to share that our Spring 2025 recruitment initiatives are gaining momentum. Our upcoming events will center on securing interim talent for summer placements across our language technology projects, reflecting our dedication to developing future leaders in our field. Enlightening professors and other university staff on our mission is an added bonus to these events.
Additionally, we endeavor to expand our teams with both supported and volunteer positions, we're energized by the caliber of candidates and the potential impact they'll bring to our critical initiatives. The collective efforts of colleagues committed to the upcoming recruiting season is extremely encouraging. These subject matter experts bring a positive dynamic to presenting our workplace technology tools and mission ethos.

Brian: Share a brief background of your experience and ministry prior to joining SIL.
Todd: I obtained my bachelor's degree in Computer Science with a Systems emphasis. I was then hired by IBM to join a group working on software for human languages, working there for nine years.
During that time, I was also very involved with activities at my church, as well as volunteering with a Central American educational outreach ministry for a couple years and then with a prison ministry for several years.
Brian: Describe your current role and the team you are part of within Language Technology.
Todd: I have been working as a software developer on a Bible Translation application for Windows, which is used by thousands of translators all over the world. Through the end of last year, I was actively writing code to fix bugs and implement new features. Now I am shifting gears to help flesh out a road map for the next generation Bible Translation app.
Brian: What or who motivated or inspired you to get involved in the Bible translation movement?
Todd: When I was in college, a couple of SIL software developers did a presentation about projects they were working on related to translation and linguistic analysis. I was blown away by the level of technical skill being put to use in service to God's kingdom. I thought, "I could see myself working with a group like that someday." I remembered that years later when I thought about how working on projects like that could unite my skills in software development with my passion for God's Word.
Brian: What aspects of your current work do you enjoy the most?
Todd: I have always enjoyed software development, because I can get immediate feedback on whether my work was successful or not. But I also feel a deeper satisfaction knowing that what I am doing is helping people do kingdom work. At times I have been able to interact directly with users, and it is gratifying to have that connection with people that I have been helping indirectly. It's an honor to serve them as they serve others.
Brian: How would you describe your teammates in just a few words?
Todd: Very intelligent, pretty passionate, definitely able to work elsewhere for higher compensation, but wanting to be here where they can have a meaningful impact on the world.
