>From the Manager’s Desk
by Robert Clementz
Around the world, partnerships, strategies, and technology are coming together to accelerate Bible translation for minority language communities. Nearly 25 years ago, I was introduced to a particular approach that dramatically speeds this vital work.
Multi-language projects like the Aitape West Project in Papua New Guinea bring together translation teams from multiple language groups—in this case, ten—to work collaboratively on the same passages simultaneously. Teams wrestle with challenging texts together, sharing insights and solutions that benefit everyone involved.
Language technology enhances this collaboration in meaningful ways. Digital platforms enable teams to compare their work, identify patterns across languages, and test translations with their communities. Consultants can provide timely feedback remotely, and specialized tools support translators throughout every stage of their journey—from initial drafts to final publication.
None of this progress would be possible without the dedicated, innovative people who drive these tools forward. We're deeply grateful for everyone who has engaged with us over the past year, particularly in recent months. Our visits to universities and other events have connected us with passionate individuals eager to contribute to this mission.
As we approach year's end, we're excited about the conversations ahead and the gifted people who will soon join us in this work. Together, we're not just translating words—we're opening doors for communities to encounter Scripture in the languages closest to their hearts.

Brian Chapaitis: Could you walk us through your professional and/or ministry experience before becoming part of the SIL team?
Cassie Weishaupt: I joined SIL straight out of my undergraduate studies at McGill University in Montreal, where I studied linguistics, psychology, and computer science as part of my cognitive science degree. I interned during my final semester and then joined full-time in August 2022, a few months after graduation. I had some prior ministry experience through my role as prayer coordinator and co-president of McGill's Power to Change chapter (Canadian Cru), and the only programming experience I had was through my programming assignments in class. Otherwise, this was a completely new world to me!
Brian: Tell us about your current position and the specific Language Technology team you work with.
Cassie: I currently serve as a data scientist with SIL's AI Capability team under SIL Central Services. The majority of my time I spend on developing AQuA, a tool to help out
with the Bible translation quality assessment process. I also sometimes work on the other
projects our team develops for machine translation, audio, sign language, and interacting with Bible translation resources.
Brian: Looking back, what is one individual or experience that sparked your passion for joining the Bible translation movement?
Cassie: My motivation to join the Bible translation movement actually stems back to high school. Back in 2018, my home church in Oklahoma announced that they would be partnering with IllumiNations to give all people access to God's Word by 2033. I knew at that point that I wanted to study computational linguistics at university and started wondering whether there were ways artificial intelligence could be leveraged to support this movement. Four years later, a friend from my cognitive science program sent me an SIL internship listing for developing AI technologies for Bible translation quality assurance! The rest is history.
Brian: When you reflect on your daily responsibilities, which elements bring you the most fulfillment?
Cassie: The best part of my work is getting to meet those directly involved in the Bible translation process, whether they be translators, consultants, project coordinators, etc, and how they are using AI to meet expressed needs in their communities. I love being able to learn from others and see directly the ways I can contribute to the movement.
Brian: If you had to capture the essence of your teammates in just a handful of words, what would you say?
Cassie: Innovative, experimental, fast-paced, adaptive, curious, responsive...
Prayer Points for Talent Acquisition
• Please pray for meaningful continued conversations with the over 250 individuals our team has connected with in recent months.
• Pray for the students who have expressed interest in joining us for summer positions, and that we would find experienced mentors to guide and support them.
• Pray for wisdom and resilience for our language technology leaders as they adapt to new organizational leadership and navigate budget adjustments.
• Praise that we’ve been engaged with ten events in the last couple months and twelve different staff have participated in those visits!
