Wayne Pfahler, from Epic, will make a presentation today at the CS colloquium.

Title: Electronic Medical Records

Abstract: Healthcare is a complex environment where integrating device data into the electronic medical record is necessary to provide great patient care. Synthesizing data from devices in a meaningful way for clinicians to interpret and patients to understand is a challenging problem. In addition to conventional devices like bedside monitors, we are seeing an explosion in self-monitoring devices like wifi-enabled weight scales, smartphone-enabled blood glucose meters, etc. The speaker focuses on device integrations at Epic. During this talk, he will discuss three areas where device integrations affect patient care: hospital device integration, devices in the home, and medical imaging integration. He will present a specific scenario in each area covering the workflow, how it affects patient care, the technical challenges and Epic's approach to overcoming these challenges.
