XSEDE SUMMER RESEARCH EXPERIENCE Call For Students
February 15th Deadline

The XSEDE Student Engagement Program is seeking undergraduate and graduate students for a 10-week project experience for this summer. Working with XSEDE researchers and staff, students will make meaningful contributions to research, development and systems projects that benefit the national scientific and computational community. In exchange, students will be provided with travel support for project orientation and to attend the XSEDE14 conference in Atlanta, GA in July, and a small stipend.

Projects for 2014 address a wide variety of computational needs. Some of the projects allow students to work remotely (from their home or home institution), although some require the student to be onsite at their supervisor's institution. All projects will have well-defined work plans, established collaboratively at the orientation meeting. Students are also expected to participate in surveys and other evaluation activities, to help XSEDE track the effectiveness and impact of the program.

Available projects are listed at 2014 Student Engagement Projects. To apply, complete the form online at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/StuEngApplication-2014 and email your required documents to outreach-stueng at xsede.org<mailto:outreach-stueng at xsede.org>. Your application will not be considered until all material has been received.

2014-2015 XSEDE Scholars Program (XSP) Application
April 1st Deadline

Are you interested in learning more about high performance computing (HPC) and the exciting and valuable digital resources available to research scientists for free? If so, the XSEDE Scholars Program (XSP) is now accepting applications for its selective year-long program for U.S. students from underrepresented groups in the computing sciences to learn more about high performance computing and XSEDE resources. The focus is on the following underrepresented groups: African Americans, Hispanic/Latinos, Native Americans, and women. As a part of the XSP, you will:

- Receive a travel grant to attend XSEDE 14 in Atlanta, Georgia on July 13 – 18, 2014 (https://conferences.xsede.org/xsede14).
- Meet other Scholars in special session at XSEDE14 and via an online community throughout the year.
- Join a select community of over 100 former XSEDE Scholars.
- Network with other academicians and leaders in the XSEDE research community.
- Learn about research, internships, fellowships, and career opportunities.
- Participate in at least six online technical training and mentoring webinars with other Scholars for free.

Application Deadline: April 1, 2014 at 11:59 p.m. (CST); Notification of Award: April 15, 2014 at 5:00 p.m. (CST)

APPLY HERE: http://bit.ly/1drMGeI

Eligibility Requirements: This program is open to graduates and undergraduates with solid academic backgrounds. Students majoring in computational science (computer science, applied mathematics, and high performance computing applications) and all STEM degrees who seek training and exposure to high performance computing and XSEDE resources are sought. Underrepresented minority students and women who are interested in computational sciences are strongly encouraged to apply. You must be a U.S. citizens or permanent resident currently attending a U.S. institutions to be eligible for this program. You do not need to be a computer science major to apply. If you are a STEM major and use mathematics/computational science in your studies and research, you are eligible. We will also consider non-STEM majors who use mathematics/computational science in their studies and research on a case-by-case basis.

International Summer School 2014 on HPC Challenges in Computational Sciences
March 9th Deadline

January 28, 2014 -- Graduate students and postdoctoral scholars from institutions in Europe, Canada, Japan and the United States are invited to apply for the fifth International Summer School on HPC Challenges in Computational Sciences, to be held June 1-6, 2014, in Budapest, Hungary. The summer school is sponsored by the European Union Seventh Framework Program’s Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe Implementation Phase project (PRACE-3IP), U.S. National Science Foundation’s Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment (XSEDE) project, RIKEN Advanced Institute for Computational Science (RIKEN AICS), and Compute/Calcul Canada.
Leading American, Canadian, European and Japanese computational scientists and HPC technologists will offer instruction on a variety of topics, including:
· Access to EU, U.S., Japanese and Canadian HPC-infrastructures
· HPC challenges by discipline (e.g., bioinformatics, computer science, chemistry, and physics)
· HPC programming proficiencies
· Performance analysis & profiling
· Algorithmic approaches & numerical libraries
· Data-intensive computing
· Scientific visualization
The expense-paid program will benefit advanced scholars from European, U.S., Canadian and Japanese institutions who use HPC to conduct research. Interested students should apply by March 9, 2014. Meals, housing, and travel expenses will be paid for the selected participants. Applications from students in all science and engineering fields are welcome. Preference will be given to applicants with parallel programming experience and a research plan that will benefit from the utilization of high performance computing systems.

Blue Waters Student Internship Program
Deadline March 21st
The Blue Waters Student Internship Program is a component of the Community Engagement designed to immerse undergraduate and graduate students within projects associated with the Blue Waters and/or XSEDE efforts.
We are actively seeking faculty and students to participate in year-long student internship opportunities. Students in the program will gain experiences involving the application of high-performance computing to problems in science, mathematics or engineering.
The program provides students with:
· a stipend for undergraduate participants totaling $5000,
· a two-week intensive Petascale Institute (May 25-June7, 2014), and
· travel to the Blue Waters Symposium 2015.
This program provides support for internship activities at any accredited degree granting institution in the United States. The internships awarded through this program may be for students working with a faculty member on their home campus, or at another campus. Graduate students are welcome to apply to attend the Petascale Institute. They are responsible for arranging their own research advisor and any stipend would be the responsibility of the research advisor. Interested students can apply at: bluewaters.ncsa.illinois.edu/internships<http://bluewaters.ncsa.illinois.edu/internships> or shodor.org/petascale/participation/internships<http://shodor.org/petascale/participation/internships> .
Faculty Interested in Mentoring:
Faculty who would like to mentor an undergraduate student can post descriptions of available positions. Positions can be intended for a particular applicant or opened to all qualified applicants. Undergraduate students should submit an application for consideration. Internship positions and applications can be submitted at: bluewaters.ncsa.illinois.edu/internships<http://bluewaters.ncsa.illinois.edu/internships>
or shodor.org/petascale/participation/internships<http://shodor.org/petascale/participation/internships> .
Blue Waters, supported by NSF and the University of Illinois, is one of the world’s most powerful supercomputers and the fastest on a university campus. Up to 1 percent of the computing capacity of Blue Waters is available for educational efforts aimed at preparing the next generation of students and teachers and an educated workforce. The goal of the Blue Waters Student Internship Program and of the education allocation is to provide unique learning experiences for undergraduate and graduate students across a wide array of traditional and emerging disciplines.
In collaboration with Blue Waters, Shodor and the National Computational Science Institute will provide support and content for the internship program and Petascale Institute.
