On Tuesday afternoon, we have the honor of hearing Prof. Jim Vanden Bosh’s presentation based on a workshop he did with Prof. Vander Lei.
Title: Big Data, Corpus Linguistics, and You
Abstract: Words, especially in large quantities, can be described as the Big Data of the humanities, and Corpus Linguistics provides applications that allow people in the humanities (and in the rest of the disciplines as well) to do systematic research on bodies of texts, studies that can attain the status of empirical evidence. Students in the sciences may find themselves interested in such applications for the study of words, but they may also find that they have gifts and skills that allow them to make real contributions to this field of study. This brief workshop is aimed at providing an introduction to Corpus Linguistics and its relevance to students in fields related to computers.
Join us on Tuesday, May 5, in SB 010, at 3:30 p.m.
