Job Description

Job Title:   Library Network Support Technician-Part Time - Temporary position
Location:  Grand Rapids Public Library - Main Branch
Status:  Non-exempt
Code No:  968
Range No:  11PT

Wage Range:  $16.00 per hour
Hours:  20 hours per week (weekend and evening hours will be required)
Supervisor:  Information Systems Manager

Job Summary:
This is technical computer systems work in support of a multi site network.  Work includes providing backup support for the Information Systems (IS) Manager and IS Assistant Manager.  This would include the installation of new systems, installation and replacement of system components, in networked PCs and peripherals, maintaining inventory of equipment and supplies.  Work is performed in keeping with high technical standards, library system's policy and procedures manual.  The work is performed under direction from the Information Systems Manager and the IS Assistant Manager.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1.  Assist IS Manager and IS Assistant Manager with the operation of the network systems.
  2.  Maintain PC hardware and software.
  3.  Write minor programs for Internet/Intranet applications.
  4.  Provide end-user hardware and software support.
  5.  Assist with the installation of networked and stand alone workstations.
  6.  Install components in systems as may be required.
  7.  Swap out defective hardware components including monitors, keyboards printers, etc.
  8.  Research and/or download updated drivers (eg. video, printer).
  9.  Maintain a tracking system for invoices and components as may be required.
  10. Assist with the installation of new software upgrades.
  11. Assist with the evaluation of hardware and software components for purchasing.
  12. Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  1.  Provide help desk support via email, phone, and/or in person.
  2.  Ability to install system hardware, software, and related equipment.
  3.  Ability to communicate effectively with team and other staff members.
  4.  Basic understanding of TCP/IP.
  5.  Ability to work with Windows, Linux/Unix, and related software.
  6.  Ability to work with tools and equipment used to install, troubleshoot, and repair computer equipment.
  7.  Ability to use computer keyboard.
  8.  Ability to adjust schedule to accommodate requirements of service.
  9.  Ability to establish and maintain email accounts for system.
  10. Assist in researching products.
  11. Ability to maintain good database files for the purpose of inventory and cost monitoring.


Working Conditions:
The employee must be able to sit or stand for extended periods of time in the performance of the duties associated with this position.  Lifting objects weighing up to 50 pounds with out assistance is also required.  The ability to access, input, and retrieve information from a computer is essential to this position.

Education:

Two years college in computer science or related field, experience in related field or an equivalent combination of training and experience.  Two years of experience is required.

A thorough knowledge of Microsoft Windows is required and experience with Open Office is preferred.  Knowledge of Linux/Unix desirable.  A working knowledge of at least one application package in each of these areas: communication, spreadsheet, database management, word processing, email, and Internet browsing.
