Hi students and alumni,
The W. Michigan Aviation Academy is a local public high school (5363 44th St SE) specializing in STEM courses, especially as they apply to aviation. They have a very strong FIRST Robotics program, and the focus mainly on pre-engineering kinds of courses.
However they are planning to offer a new introductory computer science course, taught remotely by Microsoft employees, starting next Fall. They are looking for a volunteer or two (students or alumni) to help out as teaching assistants. Since MS employees will be doing the actual teaching, this basically means to be present in the room during the class, in case the students need personal assistance. It would involve a commitment of perhaps 20 hours of training this summer, and then next fall about 1 hour per week at lunchtime, probably on Tuesday or Thursday.
This doesn't pay anything except gas reimbursement, but it is the kind of thing that looks great on a resume, for a pretty modest time investment. If you are interested in high school teaching (or working at Microsoft someday), it is the kind of thing that could open some doors.
If you are interested, please contact me, and I will put you in touch with Ron Baum, the person organizing the course. Since the training takes place this summer, they want to finalize this in the next month, so if you are interested, let me know right away.
Cheers,
-Joel.
