Lutheran Social Services of Michigan is launching a summer/after school program focused on
increasing youths' interest in STEM professions (Science, technology, engineering and Math), called
the Gamer's experience; at its neighborhood center located in Saginaw, MI. The Gamer's Experience
is an 8 week, half-day summer and after-school camp where youth will have access to computers with
software that allows them to design their own video game. Through the instruction and support of a
programming teacher, 15-20 students per year will translate their video game vision into reality from
the storyboarding process through code-writing. The program will utilize a well-supported program
known as Scratch, which was developed by the Lifelong Kindergarten Group at the MIT Media Lab.
Scratch, allows users to program their own interactive stories, games, animations and share their
creations with others in the online community. More importantly, "it helps young people learn to think
creatively, reason systematically, and work collaboratively - essential skills for life in the 21st century."
